Did you know that people are trying to buy property in Broadchurch? Yes, that’s right, the fictional town in ITV’s gripping crime drama series. Apparently, some people don’t realise it’s not a real place, and are desperate to live in the stunning location . . .
. . . like we do!
Of course, the soaring cliffs and windswept shoreline featured in the programme is actually West Bay, just outside Bridport on the Dorset coast. From our location in the heart of Dorset it is a short car hop away, as are so many stunning locations.
A property you probably aren’t able to afford is Wolf Hall, and anyway it’s not in Dorset so why would you want to, but did you know that some of the scenes for this TV adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s prize-winning historical novel about Thomas Cromwell were shot at Sherborne School in the pretty town of Sherborne in Dorset. It’s also the place where Coldplay’s Chris Martin went to school! As did World War Two codebreaker, Alan Turing, the subject of the fascinating and heartbreaking film, The Imitation Game. Again, the school was used, in the filming of Turing’s schooldays.
Of course, Dorset locations for film and TV are nothing new. Who could forget the haunting scenes from The French Lieutenant’s Woman - Meryl Streep gazing out to sea from the harbour wall at Lyme Regis, better known as the Cob? This beautiful harbour and town are well worth a visit.
And all these locations and more are just a few miles from The Fox at Ansty, your own romantic location set in the heart of the Dorset countryside.
It is magic, just like Harry Potter and yes, you’ve guessed it, part of the film, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, was shot in Dorset. The Weasley’s home, The Burrow, was filmed amongst the reed beds at the famous Swannery at Abbotsbury. This is a lovely place where you can watch and be among a nesting colony of mute swans, all free flying and without the aid of a broomstick!
And we’ve not even mentioned Dorchester - or Casterbridge as you might know it - Thomas Hardy country right on our doorstep.
So there you go. Spend a few days with us and clock up these stunning movie locations. Bring your camera and star in your own production. That’s a wrap!
